Chorus – the effect that creates the impression of polyphonic performance. This effect was invented to simulate the choir – the simultaneous performance of the work by several musicians on the same type of instrument, for example, a guitar. The implementation of the chorus was not performed in the best way, as even an inexperienced listener can easily distinguish the sound of the chorus from the use of the effect. However, this fact did not affect the distribution of the device among musicians. It is widely used by both beginners and professionals.
The chorus is used for the insulation and wider sound. Although the device was invented to create a multi-voice performance, it can not fully simulate the real sound of the choir.
Let’s take the example of the built-in plugin Fruity Chorus FL Studio program consider the parameters of this effect.
Usually one of the settings of such plug-in is the Voice or Order parameter – the number of simulated voices. The Fruity Chorus plugin is pre-configured for 4 voices – 1 original and 3 copies of the signal.
Delay – delay the sound of voices (up to 30 milliseconds);
Depth – modulation depth (changing the pitch of voices relative to each other);
Stereo – the spread of voices on the panorama (adds volume to the sound). This parameter creates the effect of stereoheroes. When using it, the delayed copies sound as if from different places in the stereo field.
LFO 1 Freq LFO 2 Freq LFO 3 Freq – rate modulation of each copy of the voice;
LFO 1 Wave LFO 2 Wave LFO 3 Wave – waveform low frequency oscillator, which is modulated by the signal;
Cross type – the type of filter cut-off frequencies have copies of signal:
HP – high-pass filter (cuts the bottom);
LP – low-pass filter (cuts off the top);
Cross Cutoff – filter cutoff frequency;
Wet only – plugin operation mode:
No – 4 voices (1 signal and 3 copies);
Yes – 3 votes (only 3 copies).
Applying the chorus, the musicians typically use small values of Delay and Depth to give the sound of softness and warmth.
